Multiple Teams · Cardinals look sharp in scrimmage

The Cardinal football team opened the 2017 season with an Arkansas Activities Association benefit game with Conway Christian Eagles.  The two teams played three live quarters with the fourth quarter consisting of each team getting a ten play drive.

The Cardinals were first on the scoreboard when senior quarterback Hunter Hilson found Conner Burrow on a 61 yard touchdown pass.  William Vasquez split the uprights to give Harmony Grove a 7-0 early lead.

The Cardinal defense would stand tall on Conway Christian’s next drive with senior noseguard Trace Dixon sacking the Eagles’ quarterback on a third and long. The offense would strike quickly when Hilson connected with Burrows again from 28 yards out to push the lead to 14-0.

Both teams would trade punts on their next two possessions until Vasquez broke the scoring drought on a 20 yard field goal to extend the Cardinals’ lead to 17-0 midway through the second quarter.

The Eagles would find the endzone late in the second quarter on a 36 yard pass to cut the lead to 17-7. The Cardinals received the ball with 1:44 on the clock before the half.  The Harmony Grove offense would take the ball 65 yards in six plays and score on a 8 yard pass from Hilson to Burrow to push the lead to 23-7 at the half.

The Cardinal defense would open the second half with a turnover when Colton Dixon recovered a fumble on the Conway Christian 25 yard line to give the offense excellent field position.  The offense would capitalize when Hilson found Sean Small on a 25 yard touchdown pass and pushed the lead to 29-7.
