Multiple Teams · Jr High Boys Basketball Try-outs, April 7th

Junior high basketball tryouts for current 7th and 8th grade boys will be held next Thursday, April 7th in Daniel Henley Fieldhouse from 3:45-5:00.  Please let Coach Hogue know by Monday, April 4th if your son is going to tryout so he can get a handle on the real numbers.  We have over 30 right now that are interested in trying out.  We are going to keep around 12 for summer team camps and leagues and have a second tryout when school starts and add another 5 or 6.  The second tryout will be for new students and those that did not make the first cut but still want to try and make the top 18.

For encouragement I have used this next story quite a few times but it is very pertinent.  My brother Michael, who is 3 years younger than myself did not make the 9th grade team at the school where I had started a couple of years and was currently a senior back in the 80’s.  He was very disappointed and probably felt a little pressure to be a good player.  Our father had played at Arkansas and was very supportive of us in anything we did but we all gravitated to athletics, especially basketball.  Michael got over his disappointment and started to really work hard at his game and mature. Long story short, he ended up being an all-state player averaging 24 ppg his senior year and he earned a full scholarship to play at the University of Arkansas.  I relay all that to let you know that not making the team is hard for most kids and parents, I have lived through that.  Making these selections are not easy and coaches are bound to make some mistakes but I will try to be as fair as possible and I take this seriously.  Unfortunately there comes a time when everyone can’t play.  Here are some of the things I look for in players:

1. Will he do the “right” things on and off the court
2. His Ability to serve teammates
3. Does he make those around him better
4. His Willingness to do the little things.  Hustle!
5. Does he have Good communication skills
6. His Knowledge of the game
7. His talent
