JOSH BRIGGS

HASKELL — The Harmony Grove Cardinals (7-3, 5-2) needed a big win Thursday to secure the No. 3 seed heading into next week’s 3A playoffs.

Celebrating Senior Night and hosting a pesky Horatio Lions squad, the Cardinals took control early, putting the game away by halftime as they rolled to a 35-3 win in the regular-season finale.

“The senior class is loaded with lineman and we depend on those guys heavily and they came through tonight,” said Head Coach Paul Calley.

Senior quarterback Hunter Hilson started the game with a bang, trucking 30 yards untouched for the game’s first score with 11:02 left in the first quarter, putting the Cardinals up 7-0.

After a fumble recovered at the Lions 15-yard line by junior Jake Brooks, the Cardinals again turned to Hilson for another score, this time through the air as he found Sean Small on the second play of the series.

Harmony Grove led 14-0 with 9:30 to roll in the opening frame.

Horatio would string together a decently long series on its next drive, but a personal foul penalty and a big combined sack from Mason Massey and Trace Dixon would help end it with a punt.

With the rock at their own 12, the Cardinals, too, would put together a lengthy drive, marching 88 yards on 14 plays before Brooks powered in from 2 yards away to make it 21-0.

“As long as you have 6 (Hilson) and 3 (Brooks) on your side —on both sides of the ball — you have a good chance to win,” Calley said. “Those guys have come up big all year long. But they will be the first to tell you that their lineman are a big help.”

Harmony Grove’s defense continued to wreak havoc on the Lions, forcing a second punt before turning things over to the offense once again, this time at its own 31.

Anchored by three completions for 48 yards from Hilson, the Cardinals turned to Brooks from 10 yards away to cap their fourth scoring drive with a TD to lead 28-0 with 5:44 left in the half.

A third punt would allow Harmony Grove the chance to enforce the sportsmanship rule before halftime.

With 53 seconds left, the Cardinals took over at their own 15 and turned to Hilson once more.

The senior would complete a quick 13-yard pass before using his legs to gain 25 more. A couple of short completions and a big 15-yard pass interference call would give the Cardinals a first down at the Lions 18 with about 12 seconds left.

Looking to score quickly, Hilson found Brooks over the middle for an 18-yard TD to make it 35-0 at the break.

The second half was quick as the clock rolled and only saw one score as Horatio knocked through a 35-yard field goal, cutting Harmony Grove’s lead to 35-3.

Hilson led all passers and rushers with 160 yards through the air and two scores and 71 on the ground and a TD.

Hilson completed 12 of 17 pass attempts in the process.

Brooks would truck for 50 yards on eight carries, scoring two TDs as well.

Small put together a nice performance, hauling in three completions for 56 yards. Logan Whitley would collect four catches for 31 yards in the win.

With the victory, Harmony Grove seals the No. 3 seed in the postseason as it plans for its fifth straight trip to the playoffs.

The Cardinals will travel to No. 3 seed Hoxie (6-4, 5-2) in Round 1. Opening kickoff is set for 7 p.m. next Friday.

“Last year made believers out of our guys that if you prepare and you have confidence, you can go on the road and win,” Calley said.

Harmony Grove earned the fifth seed in 2016 and traveled to Mountain View, defeating the No. 1 seed for its first postseason win in school history.

“We played really well that game and we are going to have to do the same thing against Hoxie. They are very similar to us, but I think they probably have the size advantage and they are going to have the home-field advantage. We have played well on the road this year and I am excited about it and we are exactly where we wanted to be after Week 10.”

Thursday’s win also ties the school record for victories, matching totals from 2014 and ’16.

Multiple Teams · Cardinals get it done with visit to Gurdon

By: Alexis Meeks

GURDON- The Harmony Grove Cardinals traveled to Gurdon and upset the Go-Devils on Senior Night 34-10 Friday night to push the Cardinals to 6-3 overall, 4-2 in the 5-3A Conference.

“(I’m) so proud of them,” Head Coach Paul Calley said. “It was cold. The wind as blowing. They played man coverage on us and we had to run the football to win and we did.”

The Cardinals received the opening kickoff but punted the ball to the Go-Devils. The Go-Devils got the ball on their 43-yard line. They drove the ball to the 8-yard line of the Cardinals but were stopped. The Go-Devils took an early 3-0 lead after a successful field goal attempt.

The Cardinals rallied back receiving the kickoff at their 36-yard line. Finding success in the run game, the Cardinals ran the ball 10 times on the drive. They scored a 10 yard touchdown with running back Jake Brooks to take the lead 7-3.

The Cardinals forced the Go-Devils to punt on their next drive and scored again after a field goal by William Vasquez to go up 10-3 with 8:31 left in the first half.

The Cardinals held the Go-Devils scoreless in the second quarter and scored another field goal as time ran down in the half to go up 13-3.

Coming out of the half, the Go-Devils received the kickoff, but were forced to punt five plays later. The Cardinals were able to find the end zone again with Brooks and extended their lead to 20-3 with 6:40 left in the third quarter.

“We have some gutty football players,” Calley said. “Number 6 (quarterback Hunter Hilson) and number 3 (Brooks), I can’t say enough about them.”

The Go-Devils started their next drive from their own 3-yard line. ON a third-and-goal from the Cardinals 3 yard line, Gurdon fumbled the ball and it was recovered by cornerback Connor Burrow, who took the ball to the Go-Devils’ 33-yard line. The Cardinals drove the ball to the 5-yard line before time expired in the third quarter. Seven seconds into the fourth, the Cardinals scored on a quarterback keeper by Hilson, putting the Cardinals up 27-3.

Both the Go-Devils and the Cardinals turned the ball over on downs on their next drives. After getting the ball back, the Go-Devils fumbled on first-and-10 from their own 25-yard line and it was recovered by the Cardinals on the 20-yard line. One play from scrimmage and the Cardinals found the end zone again on a 20-yarder to go up 34-3.

The Go-Devils did find the end zone late in the fourth quarter to cut into the Cardinals lead, but the Cardinals held on to win the game 34-10.

Harmony Grove will wrap up the regular season next week when the Cardinals host Horatio, which were shut out by Glen Rose 35-0 on Friday.

Multiple Teams · Cards cut down by Wolves

By: Tony Lenahan

HASKELL- It was a rough go of it for the Harmony Grove Cardinals Friday at Sykes Stadium in Haskell. Facing 3A defending champion Prescott Curley Wolves, fresh off their first conference loss in almost four years to Glen Rose last week, the Cardinals felt the Wolves’ wrath falling 48-10 at home.

The loss snapped Harmony Grove’s three-game win streak, dropping the Cardinals to 5-3 overall, 3-2 in 5-3A. Prescott improves to 7-1 overall, 4-1 in league play.

The Cardinals kept it close early and throughout the first half as Prescott scored a touchdown n a 14 yard run by Thomas Muldrow for the Curley Wolves’ 7-0 lead after one, but Harmony Grove responded in the second quarter with a 36-yard field goal from senior kicker William Vasquez for the 7-3 deficit.

Prescott picked up a 25-yard TD run from Isaiah Wayne to make it 14-3, but the Cardinals would score next on junior Jake Brooks’ 2-yard TD to make it a 14-10 game.

But, it was all Curley Wolves after that as they scored again before halftime to make it a 21-10 game and held Harmony Grove scoreless in the second half, holding the Cardinals to 233 total yards, while gaining 420 of their own.

Cardinal senior quarterback Hunter Hilson had a tough go of it completing 10 of 25 passing for 97 yards and throwing a pick. Brooks ran 16 times for 62 yards and a TD, while sophomore Jayce Harrison had seven carries for 36 yards. Junior Sean Small had three catches for 52 yards, while junior Logan Whitley had three for 29.

The Cardinals hit the road to Gurdon next week to face the Go-Devils in Week 9. Gurdon (4-4, 2-3) beat Bismarck 42-6 last night.
