Multiple Teams · HG on the road again in round two of playoffs

The Harmony Grove Cardinals will travel to Clinton Friday in round two of the 3A State Playoffs. The Cardinals advanced with a 26-20 victory over the Hoxie Mustangs last Friday night.

The Clinton Yellowjackets earned the number one seed out of the 1-3A Conference.  They come into Friday’s ballgame with an undefeated record of 11-0.

On offense, the Yellojackets run the Wing-T offense and rely heavily on the ground game.  They are lead by junior running back Sky Davidson; he leads the team with 615 yards and 10 touchdowns. Under center for the Yellowjackets is versatile sophomore Weston Amos. He as thrown for 855 yards with 10 touchdowns and 3 interceptions, he is also a dual threat from the backfield compiling 455 yards rushing and 8 touchdowns.

On the defensive side of the ball, The ‘Jackets run a 3-4 scheme that relies on their talented line backing core. Junior inside line backer Caleb Bowman leads the team with 84 tackles and 4.5 tackles for loss. Davidson is a key two way player for the Yellowjackets from his outside line backer position; he leads them in tackle for loss with 11.5 on the year. In the secondary Clinton is lead by speedy Ethen Drake. The sophomore leads the team with 5 interceptions and one fumble recovery.

Hootens picks the Yellowjackets by six over the Cardinals:
“Winner advances to play Harding Academy-Junction City winner. H. Grove Haskell established a new school record for wins (eight) in last week’s 26-20 victory at Hoxie. It was the school’s second playoff win (31-20 at Mountain View in 2016). Clinton earned its first playoff win last week since 2014 in a 55-20 rout against Fouke. The Yellow Jackets rushed for 358 yards (7.8 yards per carry) against Fouke, its second-best rushing output of the year. H. Grove Haskell is playing with of a lot of confidence, but Clinton’s home-field gives it the edge in a close game.”

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 pm at Clinton High School.

Multiple Teams · Cards hold on for 2nd playoff win in school history

Tony Lenahan

HOXIE- The Harmony Grove Cardinals looked to be easing to victory in the first round of the 3A State Tournament on the long road, but that wasn’t the case. Leading 14-0 at the half over the Hoxie Mustangs on the road, the Cardinals would allow Hoxie to tie the game before going on to a 26-20 Harmony Grove victory and another road trip next week in the second round.

The win for Harmony Grove (8-3) earns the Cardinals a trip to Clinton to face an undefeated Yellowjackets team (11-0), which throttled Fouke 55-20 last night.

On Friday, the Cardinals went to the air early as senior Hunter Hilson found junior receiver Logan Whitley for a 28-yard touchdown pass and 7-0 lead after the first quarter. Hilson and Whitley hooked up again in the second quarter as the two had a 27-yard TD connection and 14-0 lead at the half after a William Vasquez point-after.

“We started off pretty hot,” Cardinal Coach Paul Calley said. “We played we the first half. We had some drops and some penalties that hurt us. In the second half, same thing- we had some drops and some penalties that hurt us.”

The Mustangs weren’t done. Hoxie (6-5) would score a TD on a 26-yard run from Diamani Davis to get within 14-7 of the Cardinals, and quarterback Chandler Spradlin found Chase Moore for a 35-yard TD receptions and 14-14 game after a Carson Spargo point-after in the third quarter.

It was back-and-forth after that as Hilson capped a drive with a 6-yard TD run and 20-14 lead after the point-after was no good and the Cardinals lead by six going into the fourth.

Davis tied things up again for the Mustangs with a 4-yard run, but the Cardinals would take the lead for good as Hilson found junior Sean Small for a 30 yard TD to make it the 26-20 final.

“We did everything we could to give it away, but somehow, someway, found a way to get it done in the end.” Calley said.

Hilson finished 13 of 27 for 230 yards and three TDs without an interception, while also running for 48 yards and a TD.

“He was unbelievable at times,” Calley said of his senior QB.

“He made some great throws. His incomplete passes were pretty much drops. When we had to have it, we were tied at 20 and he had a little injury. He fought through it, took us down the field and threw a touchdown pass. Just a gutty performance by No. 6.”

Junior running back Jake Brooks ran 14 times for 71 yards. Whitley was Hilson’s favorite target coming away with five catches for 78 yards and two TDs, with Small bringing in two for 75 and a TD.

Small also picked off a pass on defense.

For Hoxie, Davis ran for 113 yards and two TDs and Moore had eight catches for 111 yards.

Though, the Cardinals held on last night, Harmony Grove was far from flawless as they will have to address somethings before Friday’s trip to Clinton.

“It’s going to come down to us,” Calley said. “We had about eight people play well on defense (Friday) and have some guys that have to step it up. I was disappointed that some of the kids’ performace made a difference and we’re going to get that fixed.

“Offensively, we had some miscues. I don’t know what the answer is, but we’re going to have to get it fixed or Clinton’s going to be 12-0.”

Multiple Teams · Cards travel to Hoxie for 3A State Playoffs

The Harmony Grove Cardinals travel to Hoxie Friday night to take on the Mustangs in the first round of the 3A State Playoffs. Both teams earned the 3 seed out of their respective conferences.

The Mustangs finished the regular season with a 6-4 record with a 5-2 mark in the 3-3A Conference. They are lead by senior running back Diamani Davis. The shifty back leads the Mustangs in rushing and put up 249 yards and 2 touchdowns last Friday against Walnut Ridge.  They rely heavily on their massive offensive line and the zone run scheme.

The Mustangs are a balanced offense of run and pass. Directing the offense from under center is junior Chandler Spradlin. The Mustang quarterback has completed 55% of his passes this year with 11 touchdowns and only 2 interceptions. Leading the receiving core is senior Lucky Fallis. The sure handed receiver has complied 327 yards and 5 touchdowns.

Hoxie will use different fronts and coverages to stop the Cardinals attack. The defensive line is anchored by sophomore John Washburn.  The hefty defensive tackle leads the Mustangs in tackles for loss on the season.  Davis is a two way player for Hoxie with him leading the defense from the middle linebacker position.

Hootens.com has picked the Mustangs by three over the Cardinals:
“Winner plays at the winner of the Fouke-Clinton game. H. Grove Haskell (1-4 all-time playoff record) earned its first playoff win in school history last year against Mountain View. Haskell’s seven wins this year ties the school record (2014 and 2016). Hoxie returns to the playoffs after missing the postseason last year for the first time since 2009. Hoxie has won six of its past eight games, losing only to 3-3A conference co-champs Rivercrest (43-33) and Osceola (44-27). The effectiveness of Hoxie’s zone runs likely decides the outcome.”

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 pm at Hoxie High School.
