Girls Varsity Softball · Lady Cardinals jump on Poyen early and coast to 14-0 win


The Harmony Grove Lady Cardinals jumped out to an early lead on the Poyen Lady Indians and captured a 14-0 victory on Tuesday at Harmony Grove High School.

With nine runs in the first three innings, the Lady Cardinals left no doubt about the eventual outcome.

An RBI single by LJ Helmich and a two-run home run by Kristen Dempsey during the first inning and a walk by Dempsey in the second inning fueled the Lady Cardinals offense early.

Leighton Withers racked up two RBIs on three hits for Harmony Grove. She singled in the first and third innings and doubled in the fourth inning.

The Lady Cardinals Dempsey kept the Poyen Lady Indians off the scoreboard for all five innings she was in the circle. She pitched a shutout, allowing no opposing players to cross the plate on four hits while ringing up eight.

#13 couldn’t get it done on the rubber for the Poyen Lady Indians, taking a loss. She lasted just 1 2/3 innings, walked none, struck out one, and allowed three runs.

Harmony Grove added five more runs in the bottom of the third. Withers started the inning with a single, bringing home Robyn Baxley and Madison Mickle. That was followed up by Helmich’s double, bringing home Faith Otts.

The Lady Cardinals tacked on another four runs in the fourth. A error scored Rachel Kesterson and Caitlyn Crain for the inning’s first run.
