132 Reads

Harmony Grove got back on the winning track Friday night with 20-0 shutout of the Magnet Cove Panthers.  The defense rose to the occasion and held the Panthers to 166 total yards for the game.   The Cardinal offense had their best outing of the season with 296 yards of total offense.  They were 202 yards through the air and 94 yards on the ground.

The Cardinals would strike first in the contest when they would take the opening drive 62 yards in 12 plays and score on sophomore Jayce Shelnut’s 10 yard run.  William Vasquez would add the extra point to give the Cardinals and early 7-0 lead.  Magnet Cove would put together a 17 play drive down to the Cardinals’ 5-yard line, but would be stopped by on a fourth down attempt by senior Kobi Riffe and sophomore Hayden Hilson.

The next Cardinal possession would stall and be forced to punt it back to the Panthers.  The defense would come up big again when senior Zane Vergason picked Magnet Cove’s quarterback off at midfield.

Each team would trade punts on their next two possessions to give the Cardinals a 7-0 lead at the half.

The Panthers would receive the second half kickoff at their own 47-yard line, but the Cardinal defense would force them to punt in three plays.  Harmony Grove started their next drive on their own 18-yard line.  They would march down the field in 5 plays and score when Hunter Hilson found Vergason on a 19-yard touchdown pass.  Vasquez would convert on the PAT to extend the Cardinals lead to 14-0.

Both teams would trade punts on their next possessions until Hayden Hilson forced a fumble that was recovered by Jason Caple on the Magnet Cove’s 41-yard line.  The offense would capitalize off the turnover when Hunter Hilson connected with Conner Burrow for a 25-yard touchdown pass.  The extra point would fall short, but the Cardinals extended their lead to 20-0 midway through the fourth quarter and seal the victory.
